How does culture affect mental health?

Culture shapes how we understand emotions, relationships and our sense of self. For many people, especially those from immigrant or multicultural backgrounds, cultural expectations can have a significant impact on mental health.

Cultural expectations and emotional pressure

In some cultures, there may be strong expectations around success, family roles or emotional restraint. While these can provide structure and belonging, they can also lead to pressure, guilt or difficulty expressing emotions.

Identity and belonging

You might experience a sense of being 'between cultures', feeling one way at home and another in wider society. This can lead to confusion, self-doubt or a feeling of not fully belonging anywhere.

Silence around mental health

In some families or communities, mental health is not openly discussed. This can make it harder to seek support or even recognise when something feels wrong.

How therapy can help

Therapy can provide a space to explore how culture has shaped your experiences, and to better understand your thoughts, emotions, and patterns.

I offer intercultural integrative therapy exploring identity, culture and emotional wellbeing, working with clients in London and online.
